A. Gary Walsingham Academy is casting new lines in student learning through an expanded outdoor education program led by School Dean Chad Gall, thanks to a generous grant from the St. Joe Foundation.
The grant made it possible for the school to purchase all necessary fishing equipment, allowing students to participate in hands-on fishing experiences right on campus at the school’s stocked pond. This initiative removes barriers to access and ensures that every student has the opportunity to engage in meaningful outdoor learning.
Outdoor education is a key component of A. Gary Walsingham Academy’s commitment to educating the whole child. Through fishing, students develop practical life skills such as patience, responsibility, problem-solving, and perseverance. They also learn environmental awareness, safety practices, and respect for wildlife and natural resources.
“Fishing provides an authentic learning experience that goes far beyond the activity itself,” said Dean Chad Gall. “Students learn how to follow procedures, work together, care for equipment, and reflect on both strategies for success and nevering giving up. These are skills that translate directly to the classroom and to life.”
To support the growing program, Mr. Gall has also enlisted the assistance of local community members and school dads, who volunteer their time and expertise to help supervise outdoor events, teach basic fishing skills, and model safe, responsible outdoor practices. Their involvement strengthens school-community partnerships and provides students with positive role models while ensuring events run smoothly and safely.
The program also supports hands-on learning by connecting students to real-world applications of science and math concepts, including ecosystems, measurement, and observation skills. For many students, this experience represents their first exposure to fishing and outdoor recreation, fostering confidence and curiosity in a supportive environment.
By bringing outdoor education directly onto campus, A. Gary Walsingham Academy ensures students can safely explore nature while building critical thinking, collaboration, and self-regulation skills. The school is grateful to the St. Joe Foundation for investing in opportunities that enrich student learning and promote lifelong skills.
